3rd quarter report - july to september 2022

We are delighted to share below an update on just some of the projects we have been working on this quarter

PAKISTAN FLOOD EMERGENCY APPEAL

The catastrophic flooding across Pakistan has caused extreme damage, sweeping away the homes and livelihood of thousands of people. The death toll has reached over 1,000 with many more left stranded, with no roof over their head. We're raising funds to provide vital amenities and food aid through our partners on the ground, with plans to further support the build of 200 houses over the next 6 months.

So far, BCT have supported $15,000 in medical and food aid. However, this is just a drop in the ocean of what is needed and our partners have requested further assistance and funding to the sum of £238,352 for 1,200 food parcels for families, mobile medical camps and 200 houses.

Images below show our partners distributing aid and medical camps taking place

ORTHOPEDIC SURGICAL CAMP

Road traffic injuries kill more than 1.3 million people every year. Low and Middle Income countries like Kenya account for 93% of all road traffic accident deaths worldwide. Orthopedic fractures are the most common injury to occur. Most of the time, such injuries affect young breadwinners on their way to and from work. Most are unable to afford the high cost of surgery, and remain un-operated on with their fractures healing poorly. Families are plunged into poverty as their breadwinner is unable to work. Our partners on the ground CHEPS, new outreach programme costing of $30,000, will treat patients that are unable to afford surgery, free of charge. The first camp was on held from the 12th - 15th September, and 20 patients received surgery.

EYE CAMPS

Our partners on the ground are restoring sight in remote areas of Tanzania, Kenya and Pakistan. Working alongside them and with the help of our generous supporters, we have been able to facilitate 38 eye camps resulting in over 1,400 cataract surgeries throughout July and September. This includes a number of patients that came for their second eye, after successful surgery in March. We recently supported CHEPS with their 124th eye camp in Nyamdarua, Kenya. 120 surgeries were carried out, and the highlight of the day was operating on a 113 year old man!

This takes our total camps to 113 and surgeries to 6,109 for the year to date! We have 3,000 surgeries already planned for the next quarter.

The image below shows a lady from Nyahururu after her second eye was operated on. We think her smile shows how we impact peoples lives in a big way.

MANAKARA GIRLS SCHOOL

BCT are co sponsoring a girls school in Manakara, Madagscar with our partners CAI. This area has several remote villages where there are no schools. Poor children remain unschooled due to poverty, and unavailable education opportunities. Students must relocate to major cities for elementary/higher education and live in hostels. This school will provide a dorm for 140 poor students, and living quarters for 140 orphans, with capacity for around 500 students at full strength.

The images below show the building work taking place.

YEMEN CRISIS

BCT continues to support Yemen, and has pledged to continue to donate $12,000 every month towards baby milk for babies suffering from malnutrition and food parcels for families displaced by the violence of war.

WATER WELLS

Lack of access to safe and clean drinking water is the number one crisis worldwide.

We are delighted to let you know so far this quarter, another 10 wells have been commissioned and are being built. This takes our total to the year to 34. Unfortunately due to severe drought, our target approval of 100 wells hasn't been met, but we are extremely hopeful to catch up with this over the next 3 months.

PAMOJA LEO

BCT are proud to partner with Pamoja Leo on The Baby Project. Supporting any baby in Tanga, Tanzania with no lactating mother, providing the formula milk and support needed to keep the family together and stop the baby being placed into orphanage care. Since the beginning of the project, 100 babies have been resettled into families. 100% of those children remain in the family they were placed with avoiding transferral to orphanages!

£48 - Provides 8 tins of milk, which feed a baby for one month

BCT previously sponsored Pamoja Leo's school bus, and now additionally support funding of their bus driver and cook.

ANAMIL AL RAHMA SCHOOL

BCT is delighted to have sponsored 3 brand new classrooms in this new senior school. We are raising funds for sponsorship of orphaned students.

20 sponsorships are needed for senior school students

80 sponsorships are needed for primary school students

IGALULA SCHOOL, KIGOMA

We are very excited to be working with our partners CAI in restoring the Igalula School in Kigoma, Tanzania. Works include building a block of washrooms to include 10 toilets, 5 each for boys and girls.

Images below show works taking place, including new walls being raised, toilet sewerage tank dug and blocks being delivered.

KIJANA KWANZA

BCT recently funded a motorcycle for the Social Welfare Office at Kijana Kwanza. 64 of the 128 children and young people Kijana Kwanza sponsor, are living in foster care. The number of sponsored children has doubled in just the last 3 months, and the social welfare officer previously had no private transport. This made it difficult to get from one location to another as many of the families live across town and in the suburbs, meaning it took a long time to reach a sick or suffering child. This motorcycle now allows the officer to carry out monthly visits to all the foster families, inspections at 12 different schools, and responding to emergencies 24 hours a day.

In Tanzania, where many orphaned children are living with a widowed mother on a low income, or in a low income family, access to medical treatment of any kind can be impossible. This means sick children must go without healthcare, sometimes resulting in a long term medical condition or even death, when the original illness could have easily been treated.

This week, we are super proud to be launching our match funding appeal towards Kijana Kwanzas campaign to purchase medical insurance for 200 orphaned or abandoned children.

Just £20 is enough for medical insurance for 1 child for a year.

UK PROJECTS

CHILDREN OF ADAM

Our partnership with Children of Adam continues. Supporting over 100 of Londons' most vulnerable every week, providing them with hot meals, clothes and toiletries. Your donations have allowed them to continue with their expanded drive in providing 4 toilet rolls per guest each month, these are extremely well received.

HAND ON HEART

BCT's partership with HoH continues. We have recently supported their School Backpack campaign, providing backpacks to children from disadvantaged families filled with school supplies. With the cost of living crisis now being faced by thousands of families all over the UK, there is sadly a rise in the number of families seeking support for basic essentials.

This year in addition to the UK, backpacks were also provided to underprivileged children in Mombasa, Kenya.

With your generous donations, BCT contributed 60% of the costs and 1000 backpacks were distrubuted in the UK and 100 were distributed in Kenya.
