Kijana Kwanza is a child and youth development charity, supporting orphaned and abandoned street children.

BCT has been working in partnership with them for the past 2 years.

Together, we can help these children and young people access education, vocational learning and life skills training to prepare them for a future without poverty.

Pre Form 1 Course

The pre form 1 course is a 10 week residential programme in Moshi Town, Tanzania for children who are at risk of dropping out of education due to the transition from Primary school (which is taught in Swahili), into Secondary school (which is taught in English). For the most vulnerable children, in particular those who have been orphaned or abandoned, primary school marks the end of their education, with limited future opportunities for economic independence in adulthood.

This year, there have been over 200 applications for the course from across Tanzania, and 60 have been selected to attend the programme. At the end of the course, approximately 25 students will be selected for full sponsorship at Kijana Kwanza.

The funding of the course is £275 per student

Halima Children’s Home

Our partners Kijana Kwanza have embarked on a major new project providing emergency shelter for orphaned and abandoned children. The programme encourages family reunification and fostering into families as an alternative to long term institutional care for children under the age of 12.

They are currently constructing the Halima Children’s Home in a 1 acre plot in the Shabaha District of Tanzania, which will have the capacity to provide shelter for up to 120 children at any one time. There is currently no mains water supply in the area, and the drinking and sanitary needs of the facility requires a deep water well at a cost of £8,753
