It is estimated that over 46% of the Kenyan population live below the poverty line of $1 a day. As you can imagine, education does not take precedence when you are trying to keep your family alive on a pittance.
These challenges have forced children living in extreme poverty to be locked out of education.
Benzaro is one such village, located within Kenya’s Kilifi County, one of the poorest of the 47 counties in Kenya. The ECD (Kindergarten) children have for years walked long distances to study in a collapsing mud structure, seated on the bare floor without furniture, books or stationary.
Literacy amongst the community is very, very low.
BCT have constructed two nursery level classrooms for early child development, plus a vital toilet facility which is providing much needed education to those who would have otherwise been left with none due to the distance.
