Europe is facing its worst refugee crisis since the Second World War. So far, in 2015 alone, more than 30,000 desperate people have made the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, with an estimated 3000 dead or missing (UNHCR, 2015).
For those who do survive the treacherous journey, the terrifying ordeal is not over. Children arrive in Europe scared and exhausted. Many have seen and experienced untold horrors during their journey. The physical impact of travelling is also clear. The refugees have severe sunburn and blisters from their journey; many have lost their toenails from the huge distances they have walked and often they are suffering from diarrhoea, dehydration and other serious illnesses.
These desperate people have fled atrocities of all kinds searching for safety and a new life. In response to their immediate needs, BCT is funding the provision of food, water, blankets and shelter; essentials for their survival and the continuation of their onward journeys.
With winter approaching fast and thousands of displaced refugees either travelling through Europe or stranded and prevented from continuing their journeys, the need is ever increasing.
