Beta Charitable Trust Sponsors Cataract Surgeries In Kibaha

An eye camp held in September managed to screen 900 people in one day. The eye camp provided was set up at the Kibaha English Medea Primary School.

The citizens queued patiently waiting for their turn to be assessed. They had a mixture of eye conditions and were naturally worried about the results they were going to receive. Most of their friends or family knew of someone that has had cataracts and receiving this diagnosis is what people are worried about the most.

Although cataracts are  very much treatable, it still takes professionals and the right tools to do this, luxuries which are few and far between in this part of the world. Cataracts are identified using an instrument called a slit lamp. These instruments are vital in diagnosing  whether a patient has cataracts and taking the necessary  measures from there.

During the assessment for cataracts  the Doctor's came across  various other  eye ailments that patients were afflicted with. In response; 705 pairs of spectacles were issued, 175 units of medicine was prescribed, 30 pairs of sunglasses were handed out and Vitamin A and B were given to those at risk of developing cataracts.

Beta Charitable Trust recognises the amount of time, money and effort it takes to treat and prevent cataract conditions so we focus on prevention as well as being involved in the setting up of eye camps.

From the patients screened, 12 were identified as having cataracts and surgery was successfully completed on all of them.

Cataracts are a condition widely  suffered by the people of East Africa and anywhere else that Vitamin A and B are in short supply. Stories involving cataract sufferers speak of people not being able to see for nearly 20 years! After a cataract operation and recuperation this all changes. Sight is restored to those who have lived in hazy darkness for years . Giving the gift of sight is precious. Giving it could not be easier.
