| 2,551 patients visit Eye Camp in Lindi, Tanzania |
|
On Friday, 2nd of April 2010, a team started their journey to Lindi to offer special services to the residents of Lindi with regards to eye testing and eye problems and other medical ailments.
The vehicles set out at around 7:00 am on a 465km long journey from Dar Es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. Experiencing a mixture of rainy and sunny conditions, the hustle and bustle of traffic, including 60 km of roads in very bad conditions (between Muhoro and Somanga), they finally arrived at Lindi town in the evening, tired but determined. The camp started on the 3rd April, and the services included eye testing, provision of medicine and/or spectacles, tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, and other medical conditions.
A total of 2551 people were attended, and various eye cases were examined as shown below.
The Lindi hospital was also used for conducting the Cataract surgeries, which were done by a professional opthalmologist who normally works at the Dodoma Regional Hospital. A total of 97 cataract operations were conducted successfully, out of the 380 eyes diagnosed with cataracts. Many were not operated on due to high blood pressure and eye pressure (glaucoma). There remain around 100 patients in the waiting list for whom operation arrangements are already in the process.
