| 650 Families In Mombasa Given Relief During Famine Helped By Parcels |

The funds our ground team received from our Pass The Parcel appeal were evenly distributed amongst 7 different areas. These areas were deemed the worst affected by the famine and drought that has destroyed so much. They included; Kismani, Kidogo Basi, Ziwalangombe, Maweni, Mougoni, Freretown along with small villages on the North Cost. Our ground team tell us they were one of a very small number of groups that were focusing on aid for people who could not or had not made it to the refugee camps. For the volunteers it meant travelling great distances over roads of dust and dirt, and waking waking up in unfamiliar places at an hour where most are still soundly asleep to begin working towards easing the plight of others. All this effort and work brought the people of Kenya and its surrounding areas much needed aid and support . A substantial number of lives were saved due to the selfless acts of these volunteers. We have had word from one volunteer who has described his experience of delivering aid; "We have been to many villages; mostly we kept to the Mombasa area and helped with delivering the aid to the surrounding areas. I have not seen so much food in my life, it was a real thrill to see how much we were going to help people." "Some villages we went to were very pleased to see us, some villagers were too weak to show any appreciation, but we knew. The people here are no strangers to famine and drought and this is wrong. Over the last year, as well as the drought, Kenya has been subject to rising food and fuel prices.” Dr. Mathenge, who is the director of Tegemeo Institute of Research at Egerton University, explained to the volunteers that the staple foods (maize, wheat, and rice) were exposed to changes in the International markets; this makes them highly vulnerable to inflation. “Since the last harvest, the price of a 90kg bag of maize has tripled, making it unaffordable for the most and almost impossible to purchase for the rest. That is why we do this; this is why we are here." The aid our ground team handed out is in the form of food parcels that contained the basic essentials. One food parcel will contain; Maize Flower, Beans, Rice, dates and Sugar. Each parcel will keep a family of 3-4 people fed for a month. The team allocated parcels to 650 families; they logged the numbers of members in each family which amounted to 2,790 people. All this was made possible by the generous donations to the Pass The Parcel programme and our ground teams relentless efforts to provide aid and relief to some of those worse struck by the Famine and Drought. Below is a video we urge you to watch taken by our ground team. It shows the joy and the journey that took place during their efforts to provide aid: |
