Our ground team acts as Beta's guiding hand as they deliver much needed aid in Mombasa

The group of determined volunteers have been hard at work and supplied 235 families with food parcels in the Mombasa area, Kenya. The team managed to visit a number of areas and supply those who needed aid the most. A list of who needs what was drawn up by the village chiefs, in an effort to avoid a scramble for food when the team arrived. Over the last year Kenya has been subject to rising food and fuel prices, since last year's harvest the price of 90kg of maize has tripled making it almost impossible to buy for the poor. This price rise has not just affected the small villages, it is also hitting the big city's and striking most of the population which are already living under the poverty line.

Our team began their journey by visiting Mtwapa where they proceeded to meet with 40 families, each of which received enough food to last them a month. 243 people smiled and joked with our volunteers as they ate and drank for the first time in days.

The second village on our teams list was Shanz, located on the North Coast of Mombasa and should be busy with traders coming into port and farming around the local area. Due to drought and increased fuel prices neither have been taking place much so the team's arrival was a welcome break from the dismal future this disaster has left the villagers in. In total 25 families were given food parcels by our team, helping a total of 111 people.

Maweni received aid from our volunteers, meaning 60 families received precious food parcels they have desperately needed. The area of Maweni they visited was full of slumped shanty houses that the villagers had been forced to live in due to poverty, most look like they have been made out of any material the villagers could find. Women were seen leaving with their food parcels being carried on their head; this implied they were wasting no time getting the food back to their hungry families. In total 267 people were helped as a result of this visit.

Upon arriving in the next village the volunteers knew they had their work cut out for them. The village of Freretown had people of all ages, conditions and sizes, all needing immediate aid as the rest of Kenya does. Here the volunteers broke their on the road record and handed food parcels to 60 families, totalling in 331 people. There were so many people, each family had to send a representative of them to listen to the instructions on how and when to collect their parcels and this kept order and ensured the delivery process was smooth and efficient.

Moving down the South of the coast, our valiant team of volunteers visited two more villages in an effort to relieve some of the pain caused by the terrible famine and drought. They first give aid to a village called Likoni, here they manage to see an amazing 40 families and provide well needed aid in the form of food parcels and what water they had on them. The 40 families that were seen amounted to 217 people in total.

The last of their journey took them to Kisauni, a very small village that had seen most of it's residents leave in hope of finding food and water elsewhere. Here the team handed out to 10 families, totalling 37 people.

Below the team have provided us with a video of their efforts, it shows the volunteers and the happiness they have brought as a result of the donations made by our contributors we. Click here to make a difference by donating to the Pass The Parcel project.
