Mantare is one of eighteen wards of the Kwimba district in the Mwanza region, Tanzania. Like many of its neighbouring wards, Mantare is inhabited by the Wasukuma people who speak Kisukuma and Swahili, the latter being the national language of Tanzania. The landscape of Mantare and its surrounding villages is quite rural and much of the farmland is used for growing crops such as rice, corn, cassava and cotton.

Recently, Beta Charitable Trust has been working closely with our ground team in Tanzania to help provide this small town and its people with a primary school. Firstly the ground team began by identifying land on which the community project could be built. Five acres of unsurveyed land was identified as being suitable for the project. The plot of land was donated by a very generous private donor, who purchased the entire five acres of unsurveyed land for the team to work on.

The primary school will have at least seven classrooms and will be able to accommodate two hundred students. The opportunity to deliver an essential and valuable education for the towns young children seems to be drawing ever nearer.

The construction will take time. Despite this, the build is well under way with builders and villagers all pitching in and working together to speed up the process and make a local primary school for the community a reality. The buildings will be constructed using Hydra Foam interlocking bricks, an innovation in building that compresses soil into bricks. These bricks can be made on site using a specially transported machine designed to make around 600 to 1000 bricks per day by using natural and locally available resources building costs are kept to a minimum making them ideal in this part of the world. The bricks are far more resilient to adverse weather conditions such as flooding, high winds and seismic activity.

As soon as BCT received a report outlining the aims, objectives and cost of building the community project from our ground team in Mwanza, wemade the pledge. In total £8,800 was given to help the community of Mantare realise their dream of educating their young and laying the foundations for a better, brighter future.
