| BCT give 5 Haitian students a chance at education |
|
On the 12th January 2010, a 7.0Mw magnitude earthquake rocked the whole of southern Haiti. Between sixty to eighty percent of the buildings in Port-au-Prince were either destroyed or severely damaged. This catastrophic earthquake left over 250,000 people dead and approximately three million people homeless. To this day many Haitians are still living on sidewalks and under bridges in tents. Basic health care is scarce and Haiti's infrastructure remains fragile. On the 20th January our ground team in Haiti informed us that they had made contact with the principal of a very poor school whose main aim was to keep children off the streets and give them an education. A survivor of the earthquake himself, the principle explained that during the earthquake part of the school was completely flattened, crushing to death seven young children as they attended classes. Since then the school has had a constant struggle to find the funds to keep all the children in school. Whilst every effort is made not to turn children away, the school struggles on a daily basis to fund teachers salaries, children's school meals, educational material and other resources required to run the school efficiently. The school was founded in September 2000 and is located in a slum area within the city of Carrefour. The schools mission statement and objectives are simple:
Poverty is rife in Haiti. Half of children under five are malnourished, seventy-eight percent of Haitians are impoverished and earn less than two dollars a day and fifty-four percent have no income at all, leaving them in extreme poverty. After hearing our ground teams report, Beta Charitable Trust sent funding worth £600 for the school in Haiti. For as little as £120 per student/annum we have raised enough to put five young children through a year of school. With this money they will receive meals, education and a safe place to spend their days. You too can change the life of a Haitian child. Donating to any of BCTs projects is easy and simple to do.
