Bicycles and Sewing Machines

The BCT has embarked upon an economic upliftment programme, where the idea is to contribute towards equipment to enable and facilitate various individuals’ employment and business. The contribution is given as a kind of loan, where the recipients would pay the money back in regular instalments.

This repayment goes towards a central pool from which the funding is recycled for the same purpose.

In February 2008, the BCT contributed towards the below for people in villages in Tanzania:

  • 92 Bicycles
  • 64 Butterfly Sewing Machines

For a businessman or any Commercial Enterprise, transporting their products/ goods is a must. This is also the case for Farmers/Peasant/Labourers. The majority of these cannot even imaging to afford a van, pickups or even a motorbike.  Hence, for them to own a Bicycle is very useful and important, so that the peasant can supply their farm products to the market and consumers.

Furthermore, for a low class worker, to reach their work place is difficult as the cost mounts to almost 10%-20% of their monthly income.

Subsequently, bicycles are supplied to these poor people by contributing 35% to 50% for the cost of Bicycles. The economic upliftment scheme is currently active in Dar-es-Salaam, Mwanza, Dodoma, Singida, Tanga and Morogoro.

Also, in Singida, sewing machines have been supplied to the needy women, to enable them to start their own small business.
