New Year, New View
To end the year on a high note, a surgical camp was held from 28th-30th December to provide much needed ophthalmic surgical services, at the Garissa County Referral Hospital, Kenya, located 370km from Nairobi & 200km from Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Most of the group who attended were elderly, who had lived in a state of blindness for many years, but could not access treatment due to financial constraints. There were a huge diversity of ages treated and out of the hundreds of patients who were screened, our team conducted 155 Cataract surgeries, to restore vision.
Patients travelled into Garissa from distant villages, sometimes as far as 85km away, and arrived exhausted and malnourished.
Among them, 5 patients were also suffering from Glaucoma, a condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye, which leads to irreversible blindness. In addition to the cataract surgery, they underwent intervention to prevent the irreparable effects that Glaucoma can cause.
BCT thanks all our partners, sponsors and donors for the success of our many eye camps throughout 2017. It is a humbling experience to see the most destitute members of a community who are not only visually impaired, but also physically handicapped, receive free medical care.
